Social media networking etiquette

pool linkedin

The big question

A few weeks ago, I attended a workshop on networking best practices. The subject of LinkedIn connections came up. The presenter was telling us not to add people we don’t know on LinkedIn. I wasn’t sure to agree with him so I created a pool on the subject. I asked the question:

«Is it OK to add connections to your professional network on LinkedIn by simply clicking on «Connect+» in the «people you may know» list?»

The answer

As you can see on the image on top, more than 9 out of 10 responders said it is OK to add people you don’t know. I absolutely agree with this. As some people commenting on the pool said, LinkedIn is more than a social network, it is a professional network. Keep the vacation pictures and the funny cats for your friends and family on your personal Facebook account. Share thoughts, ideas, contacts and business opportunities on your wide and diversified professional network.

So I say, go ahead, invite people you don’t already know to join your professional network. If you want to connect with me personally, don’t be shy and drop me an invitation. It will be my pleasure to add you to my ever growing network of clever and knowledgeable professionals.
