Do what I say, not what I do…

Broken laptop

The big mistake: no backup

Last Saturday night, I checked my emails before going to bed and I left my laptop on my desk for the night. Business as usual, nothing to report. When I woke up in the morning, of course, first thing I do is go and check my emails. But impossible to open my laptop, all I see is a gray screen with a flashing folder containing a question mark. Long story short, my hard drive is dead, and all my work is gone in smoke. Yes, I confess, I sell cloud services and I didn’t backed-up my own laptop to the cloud. Please learn from my mistake and follow those two simple rules.

The solutions

Back it up

1.  Back up your computer regularly on an external drive or use a backup utility system such as the Time Machine™. When all goes to hell, you’ll be able to restore your system files, applications, accounts, preferences, email messages, music, photos, movies, and document.

Use repositories

2.  Save your files to the cloud, into Kohezion, Google Drive™ and/or Dropbox™. Not only will you have them safe if your computer dies but you’ll also have access to it when you’re using some else’s computer.

What just happened to me is time and money consuming. I will spend the next month reconstructing everything. So guess what I do every night and every morning now… I check if my backup utility system is doing its backups as it is supposed to. Never again will I go through all this.
